About Peace Plates & Purpose

Peace, Plates & Purpose was created from a deeply personal journey of learning how to slow down, protect my peace, and care for myself through life's challenges and transitions. After 22 years of living with Multiple Sclerosis, I discovered that wellness is about so much more than diets or routines-it's about finding balance, nourishing your body, embracing growth, and creating moments of peace even in the most difficult seasons.

I'm Nicole Robinson, and as a woman who has experienced health challenges, career changes, family responsibilities, and personal growth firsthand. I wanted to create a space that feels honest, welcoming, and encouraging for women navigating real life.

This platform exists for every woman who is tired of just surviving and is ready to start thriving, one peaceful moment, one nourishing meal, and one intentional choice at a time.

22 Years, 4 Core Life Lessons

Lesson 1: Take Care of Your Body - It’s the Only One You Have

Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) calls for a comprehensive approach to personal health, emphasizing the pivotal role that physical well-being plays in managing the condition. One of the most profound lessons reaped from years of experience is recognizing that taking care of your body is not merely beneficial but essential. Understanding this reality has profound implications on daily life, influencing everything from mood and energy levels to overall health outcomes.

A key component of physical health is nutrition. Consuming a well-balanced diet rich in whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats, supports bodily functions and can minimize potential inflammatory responses associated with MS. Throughout my journey, I have embraced these dietary changes, discovering how proper nutrition not only nurtures my body but also contributes to improved mental clarity and stamina. Adopting a plan that aligns with these principles has been transformative.

In addition to nutrition, exercise has emerged as a powerful ally in the fight against MS. Incorporating regular physical activity, whether through tailored workouts or enjoyable recreational activities, has elevated my mood and helped me maintain a sense of normalcy. Exercise fosters not only physical strength but also psychological resilience, essential in navigating the unpredictable nature of MS.

Regular medical check-ups are equally paramount. Engaging with healthcare professionals ensures a proactive approach to managing this complex condition. I have found that staying informed through these interactions empowers me, enabling better decision-making regarding my treatment and lifestyle choices. By prioritizing health and wellness through a comprehensive plan encompassing nutrition, exercise, and medical care, I have witnessed direct improvements in my quality of life, reinforcing the essential truth: there is only one body, and caring for it is indispensable.

Lesson 2: Stop Stressing Over What You Cannot Control

Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) presents a myriad of challenges, many of which are beyond our ability to control. One of the most significant lessons learned over the past 22 years is the importance of accepting those elements that lie outside our influence. This awareness has led to a considerable reduction in stress levels, allowing for a more peaceful existence.

One of the most effective techniques that helped minimize stress is mindfulness. By cultivating a practice that encourages individuals to stay present and aware of their thoughts and feelings, stress reactions can be significantly reduced. Mindfulness fosters a mental environment where one can observe stressors without allowing them to captivate the mind completely. This creates a space for clarity and rational response.

Meditation is another powerful tool for managing stress. Through regular meditation, I have found that centering my thoughts on the present moment alleviates the anxiety associated with uncertainties surrounding MS. Simply taking a few moments daily to focus on breathing and thoughts has made a substantial difference. It brings a sense of calmness that counters the chaos that can arise from worrying about uncontrollable factors.

Additionally, redirecting focus towards the things I can control has proven invaluable. This includes developing a daily routine that accommodates my health needs and prioritizing activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Engaging in hobbies, pursuing personal interests, and nurturing social relationships have shifted my focus away from limitations and onto opportunities for personal growth.

Through these approaches, I have embraced the concept of letting go. Stress over the uncontrollable has been replaced by a mindset of acceptance, fostering peace of mind during my journey with MS. Recognizing that some elements are simply out of reach has not only reduced anxiety but has also paved the way for a more fulfilling life, illustrating the profound impact of acceptance on emotional well-being.

Lesson 3: Building Relationships That Fill You Up

In the journey of living with multiple sclerosis (MS) for over two decades, one profound lesson learned is the importance of cultivating relationships that provide emotional nourishment and support. The impact of social connections on mental health cannot be overstated; surrounding oneself with positive individuals can greatly enhance one's overall well-being. During challenging periods stemming from my condition, I realized that the relationships I nurtured played a vital role in my resilience and ability to cope with adversity.

Positive relationships serve as a crucial buffer against the stresses and strains associated with living with a chronic illness. They offer not only emotional support but also a sense of belonging and acceptance. Engaging with friends, family, and community members who understand and empathize can create an environment where one feels safe to express vulnerabilities and seek help when needed. For instance, during my more challenging days, I found solace in the company of friends who were genuinely interested in my well-being, offering distractions from discomfort and encouraging me to pursue activities I enjoyed.

Moreover, the quality of these interactions often outweighs the quantity. It is essential to focus on building relationships with those who uplift and empower rather than those who drain energy. Over time, I have worked to identify and strengthen my connections with individuals who provide positivity, encouragement, and understanding, transforming my social circle into a source of strength. This intentional effort in relationship-building has proven invaluable for my mental health, resulting in a more robust support system that contributes to my personal growth.

Ultimately, thriving with MS has reinforced the belief that nurturing positive relationships is not just beneficial; it is essential for emotional and mental health. Developing connections with individuals who provide genuine support and understanding is fundamental in fostering resilience during life's challenges.

Lesson 4: Choose Happiness Over Anger

Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) presents numerous challenges that can provoke a range of emotional responses. It is during these times that the decision to choose happiness over anger becomes crucial. Emotions play a significant role in coping with the fluctuations of this disease; thus, focusing on positive feelings can lead to a more fulfilling life.

For instance, there have been moments when the frustration stemming from physical limitations led to feelings of anger and resentment. Instead of succumbing to these negative emotions, I chose to view these challenges as opportunities for personal growth. This shift in perspective allowed me to embrace every day with gratitude, despite the hurdles that MS presents.

Choosing happiness often requires a conscious effort to redirect thoughts. Engaging in activities that promote joy, such as spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, or practicing mindfulness, fosters a positive mindset. On particularly difficult days, I often find solace and strength in the support of friends and family, which reinforces the importance of choosing happiness over anger.

A pivotal moment that encapsulates this lesson occurred during a challenging flare-up that doused me in frustration. Instead of reacting with anger, I opted to reflect on the aspects of life that I still enjoyed. This included appreciating simple pleasures like a warm cup of tea or a walk in nature. By actively choosing to focus on positive moments, I could alleviate stress, leading to a calmer mindset. This approach not only enhanced my emotional well-being but also improved my resilience against the adversities presented by MS.

Ultimately, the decision to choose happiness in the face of anger is a transformative practice. It serves as a vital coping mechanism, allowing me to maintain a fulfilling life, regardless of external circumstances. By prioritizing positivity, I have learned to navigate the complexities of MS with greater ease and acceptance.
